How to match tire chains to tire size
A safe chain choice starts with the complete sidewall size and the vehicle maker's clearance rules.
What to know
- Read the tire sidewall as width / aspect ratio R wheel diameter, for example 225/65R17.
- Use the chain maker's fitment table for the exact product model; sizes are not interchangeable across every chain design.
- Check the vehicle manual for permitted axle, chain class, clearance and any prohibition.
- Test-fit before the trip, retighten as directed, and stop immediately if a chain contacts brake, suspension or body parts.
Fitment safety
Follow the vehicle manual and the traction-device maker's exact fitment table. Install only on the axle positions they permit, stop if anything rubs, and respect the device's maximum speed.
Laws, agency guidance and device approvals can change. Verify before each trip. Roadside signs and law-enforcement direction control.
