What to know

Identify every state and pass on the route before departure.
Carry the required number and type of chains for drive, trailer and braking axles.
Use each state's current placement diagram; tandem and trailer requirements differ.
A closed road remains closed even if the vehicle is fully chained.

Fitment safety

Follow the vehicle manual and the traction-device maker's exact fitment table. Install only on the axle positions they permit, stop if anything rubs, and respect the device's maximum speed.
